At last: Some real thoughts!
Reading the bible through is a fascinating thing. Here are a few things I learned from reading just Genesis.
1. Joseph was responsable for the social hirarchy of Ancient Egypt
Remember those history lessons in year three? It went Pharoah, Priests, Pesants, and the peasants were little more than slaves. Genesis 47:13-25 basically says how all of the people of Egypt, except Pharoah and the priests, sold themselves to Joseph (of technicolour dreamcoat fame, and ruler of all Egypt) in exchange for food in the last few years of the famine.
2. Jacob and co. moving to Egypt was a major thing for the egyptians
It probably would only have happened because Joseph was so powerful. When the brothers came to visit him for the second time, and even though he so despirately wanted to see them, they ate apart, because 'Egyptians could not eat with Hebrews, for that is detestable to Egyptians' (Genesis 43:32). Also, Genesis 46:34 says 'all shepherds are detestable to the Egyptians.' All of Jacobs family were shepherds.
Just a few interesting things that I might expand on or add to later on.
That's all, Stay well!
